The Interst Group Meeting times and days are listed on page 2 of the membership form.
Information about who to contact for each Interst Group is listed in the September Newsletter.
The Issues Group
Each month the group gathers at homes of group members to discuss issues they consider interesting and important and to re-explore stimulating topics. Those who have the inclination and time may wish to get involved in ‘advocacy’; ie: writing letters to the editor of the local paper, making deputations to City Council, creating informative brochures for the club or the public, etc.
Topics in the last year have included a review of carbon credits, euthanasia, the ‘greening’ of Owen Sound, the importance of trees to our city, ‘ownership’ of the Arctic, and child poverty. We have also talked about aspects of immigration, education, and regional planning. You are welcome to join the group at any time during the year. Look for further information updates in the monthly CFUW newsletter.
Advocacy Group
This group has been active for the past year. The group meets once a month and spends time researching, discussing and considering possible ways of taking action on a topic of interest. This past year the group dealt with the topic of "The Crisis in Education in Ontario Schools". We attended the Ontario Council Meeting in March and made a brief presentation of our findings and concerns, we contacted other people and groups who were engaged actively in this area. We still hope to do more. Anyone interested in joining this group is welcome. The topic of interest may vary depending on what the group wishes to investigate or take action on.
The Gardeners Group
CFUW Gardeners meet informally on the third Tuesday of the month, usually at 1:00 p.m., from September to June. Recent past meetings have included a tour of Owen Sound's "Urban Forest" to view and appreciate some of the city's outstanding heritage trees, a visit to a local "One Hundred Mile Diet Market", a Christmas floral design workshop, meetings focusing on "The Healing Garden", "Your Favourite Flower", " The Foliage Garden", "The Medieval Herbalist", and a spring visit to a local garden centre to discover "What's New this Year". The December and June meetings take the form of a pot luck lunch, the latter offering a chance to tour a member's garden and plan the next year's program.
Book Clubs
Presently, there are two Book Clubs, one held on the 4th Monday evening of every month, and the other held on the other on the 3rd Friday afternoon of each month. Members take turns hosting the meetings in their homes and provide light refreshments. The books to be reviewed and discussed the following year are chosen at the planning session at the last meeting in May.. A sample of some of the books that have been chosen for 2009-2010 are “Through Black Spruce”, Three Cups of Tea, and any book about Brazil! New members are welcome to come and join us.
Healthy Lifestyles Group
The Healthy Lifestyle group meets to pursue information and activity related to the title. We meet mid week for one hour of physical activity (i.e. hiking, snowshoeing) and then either make a visit to a facility or have a discussion on a topic known to members in advance.
Those attending have found education and inspiration in the sharing of information among group members.
